Grant provides lifeline to hub

Tesco Bags of Help Covid 19 fund enabled one local community group to continue supporting those feeling isolated and alone during lockdown.

The £500 grant provided a vital lifeline to the volunteer-run community organisation the Downtown Centre, which is based at First Lisburn Presbyterian Church, enabling them to continue supporting vulnerable people feeling isolated and alone.

During the pandemic the team produced over 110 ‘Pick me up’ parcels delivered by their team of volunteers to vulnerable people in the community. The parcels included items promoting good self-care practices at home, crafts and essential food items.

Jill Watton from the Downtown Centre said: “Our hub plays a vital role in the local community were all are welcome to come, socialise with others, learn new skills and gain vital information in a relaxed, non-judgemental atmosphere.

“Many of our members already experience feelings of isolation. This pandemic has only exacerbated these existing emotions of loneliness and disconnect. The Tesco Bags of Help scheme provided us with a lifeline, enabling our team of volunteers to continue to support those in need. After receiving the packs, members reported feeling included, supported and connected during a time of such isolation.”

Tony McElroy, Tesco’s Community Manager for Northern Ireland, added: “It’s wonderful to see the dedication of Downtown Lisburn to help their local community. This shows first-hand how a Bags of Help grant can have a positive impact on local communities.”
