Schools urged to teach road safety

WITH the schools back only one month, I feel the need to ask the school principals of the grammar and secondary schools of the area if they would do a refresher course for all pupils 11-18 years old on the Highway Code and how to cross the road safely.

Over the recent weeks I have witnessed pupils take risks when crossing both main and side roads. They ignore the basic rules of stopping, looking and listening, instead just stepping onto the road.

It has only been due to the excellent skills of drivers that collisions have been avoided. However, if a pupil is hit, blame no doubt would be directed at the driver.
