‘Lagan Valley electorate and IRA victims deserve better than Maze centre move’

Dear Editor

It’s quite ironic that David Ford, an Alliance Minister, with a stroke of his pen, moved to demolish the H blocks at Magilligan Prison. an action which three consecutive DUP Environment Ministers failed to do with the infamous H blocks at the Maze, especially when their department rejected the original request by Sinn Fein to retain them by five votes to one back in 2005.

I’ll leave it up to your readership to decide if Jeffrey Donaldson’s description of the new Peace-Building Centre at the Maze is just that or will the description his Deputy Party Leader Nigel Dodds MP gave be more fitting?

He stated “whatever way it is dressed up, whatever spin is deployed, the preservation of a section of the H-Blocks, including the hospital wing would become a shrine to the terrorists who committed suicide in the Maze in the 1980s.

“That would be obnoxious to the vast majority of people and is something unionist people cannot accept”

Perhaps Jeffrey can clarify what exactly has changed? For it is he and the DUP who will go down in history for gifting and canvassing EU funding so that unrepentant IRA terrorists obtained their strategic goal, a remarkable legacy to befall a Unionist Party.

The electorate of Lagan Valley and the victims of IRA terrorism, deserve better.

Yours sincerely
