Mayor visits talking newspaper studio

LISBURN’S Mayor, Councillor Brian Heading recently visited the studio of the city’s Lisburn Leo Talking Newspaper.

The Talking Newspaper enables blind and visually impaired residents of the city to have access to the Ulster Star.

During his visit the Mayor met volunteers at the Talking Newspaper and recorded an article printed in the Star about the cross party campaign to retain the best possible service at Lagan Valley Hospital.

The Mayor congratulated the hard work of the volunteers who provide an invaluable service ensuring that their listeners have access to local news and current affairs information.

“Since its conception 35 years ago, the popularity of Talking Newspapers has grown throughout the country. Today there are more than 100,000 listeners across the UK and 500 groups and I am delighted that we have this valuable resource for our citizens in the City. This is made possible by the hard work of all its volunteers and I wish Lisburn Leo Talking Newspaper every success in the future.”

Speaking about the services the Talking Newspaper offers, Chairman Mr Robert Apsley said: “We were delighted the Mayor took the time to demonstrate his interest in the welfare of the blind and partially sighted residents of the City. It is gratifying to have acknowledgement from him to recognise ‘the week in week out’ work of our volunteers over a substantial number of years.”
