Lagan Valley MLA Trevor Lunn has welcomed a decision by the Planning Appeals Commission to dismiss an appeal by Habinteg Housing to allow development on land at Gortmore Park/Ardane Gardens in Lisburn.
“This green space was always intended to be kept as amenity land for the use of the residents of the Gortmore/Ardane/Iniscarn area and I am delighted that the Commission has upheld the decision by Lisburn and Castlereagh’s Planning Committee not to allow further housing development,” he said.
For more than two years a group of local residents have been fighting the plans by Habinteg Housing Association to build 10 apartments and a bungalow on the area of green space.
“Residents, supported by myself and Edwin Poots, made a very effective case and this judgement means that good sense has prevailed,” Mr Lunn continued.
“The open space will now be preserved for its original purpose, as an area for the use of all residents, for recreation.
“Nobody would deny the need for more accommodation in Lisburn but it should not be at the expense of green space, which all new developments are required to include in development plans.”
