Lagan Valley MLA and Alliance Justice spokesperson Trevor Lunn MLA has criticised those who placed a Union flag on a bonfire in West Belfast.
The flag was hung from the anti-internment bonfire at Divis Street before being set ablaze on Monday (August 8). In addition, a bonfire in the New Lodge area of North Belfast contained a number of tyres, which Mr Lunn said was a serious health risk for people there.
“It is disrespectful to burn any national flag on a bonfire or anywhere else,” said Mr Lunn. “It is a crime that does nothing but raise tension and promote division. It is also not acceptable to burn tyres on a bonfire, as the dangerous toxins they contain could damage the health of those in the surrounding area. Alliance believes in respectful, non-intimidatory displays of culture, and showing tolerance for the beliefs and viewpoints of others.”
