Lissue Road re-opens before improvement work complete

THE Lissue Road outside Lisburn re-opened to traffic without the improvement works being completed, it has been revealed.

The road was closed over the summer as the road was upgraded as part of the planning approval for the new Coca Cola plant.

But when it opened again in September, one section was still not finished. It is thought to be result of an issue between the contractor and a landowner in the area.

One man who runs a company off the Lissue Road said something needs to be done as soon as possible to sort out the problem which is widely used by heavy vehicles.

"It's disgraceful the way it has been left", he said. "Whoever is responsible for it needs to get it sorted out now. We all thought when the road re-opened that would be it but there is still a lot to be done."

A spokesperson for Roads Service said: "Roads Service is aware of an issue between the contractor and an adjacent landowner that has delayed completion of the works. The scheme is nearly complete, and whilst it is unfinished, Roads Service is content that the road is not hazardous in its current state. Roads Service will continue to inspect Lissue Road at regular intervals until the issue is resolved."

Lagan Valley MP Jeffrey Donaldson said that he had been contacted about the road and was aware of people's concerns.

"When Planning Service granted approval for the Coca Cola plant it included very clear conditions on the road" he said. "I will be asking Planning Service and Roads Service to confirm if the works carried out comply with these conditions."

Mr Donaldson said he hoped the issue will be resolved quickly and the condition of the road will be brought to an "acceptable standard" as soon as possible.
