Lisburn scouts take on ‘Everest’ challenge

Castle Gardens will be transformed into base camp with a large climbing wall put in place to act as Mount Everest and plenty of fun family activities running throughout the day, including archery, fencing, backwood cooking and camp skills! Refreshments will also be served in the church hall throughout the day. Mount Everest stands at over 29,000ft high and the team of Scouts plan to climb this in just six hours.

The Scout group are raising funds to help complete the £1million restoration and refurbishment of Lisburn’s oldest and most iconic building, Lisburn Cathedral. The work, which started in 2010 is due for completion this month with the doors of the cathedral opening to its congregation once again on Sunday, December 3.

Rector, Canon Sam Wright says he’s enjoyed the project every step of the way; “I feel honoured to have been part of the team given the task of restoring our beautiful cathedral, there has been a place of worship on this site for 400 years and I hope we have provided future generations with a place of worship long into the future. This has been a fun, challenging and interesting journey, one of the most momentous experiences was the discovery of the time capsule and subsequent placing of our very own time capsule, but I am so pleased to have reached the end of this journey and to be able to welcome our congregation back to worship within these walls just in time for Christmas. I would urge everyone to come and support our Scout Group and help us to put the finishing touches to this fantastic project.”
