Lisburn club is represented at All Ireland Probus rally

Two members of the Lisburn Probus Club got a close-up view of the Rugby Six Nations Trophy when they attended the annual Rally of Probus Clubs in Ireland last month.

The Rally was held in Ennis, County Clare. The keynote speaker was the incoming President of the Irish Rugby Football Union, Martin O’Sullivan. He was accompanied by the trophy, won by Ireland in the season past.

There has been a Probus Club in Lisburn since 1975.

The Lisburn Club was represented at the Rally in Ennis by Club President, Fred Hall and Treasurer, George Irvine. “Eighty clubs from both north and south sent delegates to this year’s rally,” explained Fred Hall. “Altogether, there was an attendance of some 300, so it was a great opportunity to meet members from all over the country and to learn about activities in other clubs.

The Rally in Ennis was the 30th occasion that Clubs have met together since the first Probus Club was set up in Bangor in 1971. Probus has a strong social side to it. The Ennis Club had laid on a programme of entertainement.

“As well as the business parts of the Rally,” explained Fred, “the highlight was a choir calling themselves Forever Young.Their members are 70 and above!”

The Lisburn delegates found the Rally interesting and useful. At last week’s meeting of the Lisburn Club, they presented a full report on the Rally to the members.
