Laurelhill students ‘bang’ on fundraising target

A ROYAL Gun salute to celebrate the Queen’s birthday was carried out last thursday at Hillsborough Castle by the ceremonial troop from 206 (Ulster) Battery, Royal Artillery (Volunteers) using three ceremonial light guns.

This was only the second time the military have used a Royal Gun Salute to partner with an external organisation and the Army Benevolent Fund (ABF) sponsored the event. The ABF has a very special place in the wider military community and its supporters enjoyed a spectacular display in the sun drenched gardens of Hillsborough Castle.

Pupils and staff of Laurelhill Community College were among those enjoying the event, as part of the A-level course in Applied Business the pupils have to arrange an event and they decided this year to support a military charity with a ‘Laurelhill’s Got Talent’.

Business teacher Julie Gillis said: “The pupils decided on which charity to support in the event which they really enjoyed, they raised over £1300 for the ABF and this recognition of their efforts has been very special.”

This was one of six annual 21 gun Royal salutes which are fired simultaneously in London, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Hillsborough.
