Jordan’s Mill saga takes another turn

The long-running saga of the redevelopment of Jordan’s Mill car park took yet another turn this week as outline planning permission was granted for a major redevelopment of the Antrim Street site.

The city centre site has been operating as a car park for a number of years as the owner sought planning permission for a development, which would include apartments, retail units and offices.

An application for the retention of the car park for another year is currently being considered by the Planning Appeals Commission after being rejected by the Planning Service.

At a meeting of Lisburn City Council’s Planning Committee this week, the go-ahead was given for the outline planning application. However, Alderman Allan Ewart proposed a condition be placed on the application that would restrict the number of apartments at the site to 21.

Mr Ewart also reminded the committee that it was the corporate view of Lisburn City Council that the car park at the Jordan’s Mill site should continue to operate until the redevelopment was ready to go ahead.

Planning consultants, Turley, have said they are currently considering the implications of the restrictions placed on the site by Lisburn City Council.

A spokesperson for the company said: “Together with our client we will be reflecting on the council’s decision and will be taking a view on submitting a reserved matters application.

“Our client remains keen on progressing a mixed use redevelopment.

“The car park was only ever intended to be a meanwhile use.

“Our client has been seeking expressions of interests for this development and we will be working with our client to secure a reserved matters planning approval.”
