Joanne goes the extra mile for Resurgam

A Lisburn woman will be pulling on her running shoes and tackling the Lisburn 10K next week and it will all be for a very good cause.

Joanne Casey, centre manager for LaganView Enterprise Centre and Director of The Resurgam Community Development Trust will be running the Lisburn 10K next week in a bid to raise funds for the Lisburn Community Development Trust.

Joanne’s personal interest in health and wellbeing has stemmed back to her teen years and while she has never been an avid runner she would always have incorporated a 5k run into her training schedule at least once a week.

However, about nine weeks ago she decided that she needed a change in her exercise regime and it was her husband who encouraged her to start a base training programme for running which now sees her running in excess of 25 miles a week over a four day period, something which she never dreamt herself capable of doing.

“I am currently following a base training programme for running and have to say I am enjoying this for the time being,” explained Joanne.

“As a mother of two young children spare time is of the essence so getting out to exercise for that hour is a vital requisite for my daily survival.

“Half way through my programme I decided to enter the Bann 10k on May 20 just to see how well I could do.

“I have to stress I have never entered a running race in my life so to enter this and give it a go was a big step for me especially with the Bann 10k being renowned for being one of the toughest tracks on the circuit.

“I completed the circuit in 53 minutes, a time way above my expectations and so now have a personal best to beat for the Lisburn 10K which I am confident I will do and if not I will have a lot of people to answer to.”

While entering the Lisburn 10k was initially a personal challenge, Joanne has decided to turn this into a fundraising work venture for The Resurgam Trust, of which she is a Director.

Joanne explained: “Anyone who knows of The Resurgam Trust will be well aware of the phenomenon work it is doing in terms of community, youth, social and economic development in the Lisburn area.

“Resurgam is a recognised charity and carries out a wide range of fundraising activities each year to help fund its work so what better opportunity than to raise some funds for the Trust.”

So far donations sit at a whopping £190 with a lot of people still pledging their support.
