Jane takes top place in GCSE Home Economics

It has been an exciting couple of months for Wallace High School Year 13 student Jane Kirkpatrick.

Placed joint first in CCEA GCSE Home Economics, Jane travelled to London to receive the prestigious British Nutrition Foundation’s Drummond Award for her outstanding work in the subject; it’s the fourth time a Wallace pupil has been awarded the coveted prize. The Foundation’s Patron, Princess Anne, presented Jane and her teacher (Debbie Wallace) with their awards.

Lunch at The Royal College of Physicians followed the awards ceremony.

Jane’s mum said: “The whole experience of going to the BNF awards and being a part of the event was extremely special.

“I had never attended a ‘Royal’ engagement before... and probably won’t again.

“Everyone was so warm and friendly and the informal atmosphere made it a very relaxed and thoroughly enjoyable occasion.

“Seeing Jane receive her award from Princess Anne was a proud moment and it was touching to see the genuine interest the Princess Royal showed toward each award winner.

“Jane had worked very hard for all her GCSEs and it was just wonderful for her to receive such amazing recognition for her achievement in Home Economics.”

Currently studying Chemistry, History, Mathematics and Physics at AS level, Jane herself said, “I hope to pursue my interest in Mathematics by studying Statistics at university.

“I really enjoyed studying Home Economics GCSE and I am continuing to pursue my passion for food by cooking for my family and friends in my free time.”

Jane has also been presented with a South Eastern Education and Library Board Outstanding Achievement Award having been placed First in Northern Ireland in GCSE Home Economics.

Head of Home Economics at the Lisburn school, Debbie Wallace, commented: “The BNF Awards are highly respected and it was a once in a lifetime opportunity for Jane to meet with other prize winners from all over the UK and to receive such distinguished recognition for her achievement within the field of Home Economics.

“It was a wonderful day for all concerned. Jane is very deserving of this award – the Home Economics department and the whole school community are very proud of her.”
