Honour for GB captain

Dromara woman Karen Carson has been awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s New Year Honours list for her services to young people.

Karen, who is also the mother of Lisburn City Councillor Scott Carson, is the captain of Second Dromara Presbyterian Church Girls’ Brigade and was rewarded for her 38 years of work with the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

Karen, who is the GB NI manager for the Duke of Edinburgh scheme has spent 38 years assessing GB girls and BB boys who take part in the scheme.

The Dromara woman is also the District Commissioner of Girls’ Brigade NI.

“It was a total shock and surprise,” said Karen, who found out about the honour six weeks ago. “I was absolutely delighted. We were told about the honour in the strictest of confidence and we have kept it all under wraps. The family were very excited when they found out. The phone, Facebook and email has been very busy,” she added.
