Hollywood beckons for Kris

LISBURN man Kris Campbell is bridging the gap between the two very diverse worlds of engineering and blockbuster films.

23-year-old Kris, who works for Collins CEI, an engineering firm, in Belfast and Queens University Belfast, is also a budding actor and recently took on an extras role in the upcoming US television show ‘Game of Thrones’.

After his first taste of the acting world Kris and his brother decided to enter a competition to remake classic Hollywood films and he is hoping local people will log on to support his entry.

“My background is entirely in engineering, having completed a Masters degree in Civil engineering at Queens in 2009,” explained Kris. “I enjoy collecting life experiences, and unusual anecdotes.

“Last year, I was an extra on HBO’s Game of Thrones, which was the only ‘acting’ experience I have ever had.

“This competition is a bit of fun,” he continued. “My brother and I created the parody using blue-screen, or rather ‘dark screen’ by filming at night with flood-lights. This allowed us to stick me ‘in jail’.

“We then put in as many micro-parodies as we could. The main one is Escape From Alcatraz, but is a micro version of famous scenes from Dirty Harry, The Birdman of Alcatraz, The Prisoner, Die Hard, Airplane and The Matrix, among others.

“We didn’t think that we would have any success, but California Classics, who organised the competition across the UK in conjunction with the California Tourist Board, have enjoyed the entry and it is doing reasonably well. As far as we know, we are the only entrants from Northern Ireland.

“The prize would be to remake the scene using the actual locations from the film. A professional film crew would be provided to film it in Panavision in a professional fashion, and there is a chance for it to be shown on national TV.

“Ultimately the final winner is chosen by judges, with the public vote being used as part of the ‘short-listing’. Overall the response has been pretty positive so far.”
