Historic Quarterstrategy to be launched

THE new Lisburn Historic Quarter Strategy is to be launched next Thursday night, 31st March at an event in the City Centre Management offices in Market Square.

Following on from the launch of the Lisburn City Centre Masterplan in September 2010, Lisburn City Centre Management and Lisburn City Council have been working with relevant stakeholders to bring forward a new ten year strategy for Lisburn Historic Quarter, being contiguous with Lisburn Conservation Area. This is one of the areas within the city centre identified in the Masterplan as requiring continuing focus and concerted effort to attract additional public sector intervention, reinforced by private sector investment that will also support further development of community and civic infrastructure.

Over the last decade the regeneration of Lisburn Historic Quarter has been driven mainly by heritage led investment, with for example, eight listed buildings having been refurbished, over three million pounds invested in restoring 15 commercial premises and creation of 20 private rented apartments in Bridge Street. Over £4 million pounds has been invested in the restoration of Lisburn Castle Gardens. The official opening last month of the Lisburn Campus of The South Eastern Regional College (SERC) sees the culmination of £26 million pound investment in this state of the art education, training and life long learning facility breathing new life and footfall into the Historic Quarter. Connectivity has also improved within the Historic Quarter with footpath linkage from Lagan Valley Island and the Lagan River Corridor through Castle Gardens to Market Square and the new College concourse linking Castle Street to Wallace Avenue. Increased frequency of train services to and from Lisburn Railway Station has been further reinforced by investment in platform extension that now allows the Dublin / Belfast express trains to stop in Lisburn.
