Simon Lamont is taking part in the annual event on Bank Holiday Monday (May 2) to raise funds for the charity that strives to ensure local families do not have to face cancer alone.

The Structural Bridge Engineer’s training is already well underway and he is urging people to join him and help the charity to continue providing practical, emotional and financial support as well as free therapeutic short breaks.

Simon, who works at Design ID Consulting Limited in Hillsborough, has previously completed a marathon in no less than a full three piece suit but has said this time he will stick to something a little lighter such as the charity’s running vest.

The 30 year-old explained why he is taking part.

“Cancer is a disease which will eventually affect all of us in some way, but when our children are diagnosed with it, there can be a devastating impact on their right to just be kids,” he said.

“I’m doing the Belfast City Marathon for the second time as it has previously had a great impact on my self-confidence, fitness and wellbeing. It was a great feeling in the end to finish it and get that medal.

“To be honest I need the marathon event to aim for to get me off the sofa and get in shape again. It does seem to be a bit harder on the wrong side of 30 though. I’ve also roped my fiancée Gillian Semple into a half marathon so I will have someone to train with.”
