Hillsborough is blooming marvellous

Lisburn City Council and local community residents from Hillsborough have been busy floral planting to ensure the village looks as good as possible for the forthcoming Royal Horticultural Society Britain in Bloom competition.

Last year in its first-ever entry to the prestigious Britain in Bloom competition Hillsborough achieved a Silver-Gilt award. Finalists at the competition are ranked as Gold, Silver-gilt, Silver and Bronze. Out of more than 1200 entries across the UK, Hillsborough achieved a Silver-gilt award for its high standard entry which exemplified best practice.

The Council was also shortlisted for a Discretionary Heritage Award at the ceremony, one of only four nominees from across the United Kingdom for this special award.

Hillsborough has again been nominated to go forward to the 2013 RHS Britain in Bloom finals following its success in the Ulster in Bloom competition, held in 2012.

The RHS Britain in Bloom Awards is one of Europe’s largest floral horticultural campaigns which attract hundreds of entries from across the United Kingdom to its competition.

Hillsborough will again represent Northern Ireland in the Large Village Category of the National Britain in Bloom Awards 2013. Although the results will be announced in the autumn, the actual judging of the village’s floral displays will take place in August.

With a late start to this year’s planting, given the bad weather conditions over the recent spring-time, the Council’s gardening teams and community representatives are now moving to plant flowerbeds, floral displays and hanging baskets in order to ensure 
Hillsborough has the best possible chance of achieving a second award.
