Floods cause chaos across Lisburn city

FLOODS caused widespread chaos across Lisburn and Dromara after the heavy rainfall this week.

Lisburn North Councillor Paul Givan said that he will contact the Road Service after flooding on the North Circular Road. He said residents contacted him after the road was again affected.

"I accept that at times of prolonged heavy rain it is difficult for the drainage system to cope but on the North Circular Road, where you can access the train station, flooding is a continual problem and I will be raising this issue with the Roads Service.

"Flooding at this particular site is a problem for commuters using the train station and also children and young people who are walking to local schools and the park.

"Local residents have also told me that when the road is flooded they can't walk out of their driveways because either the footpath is also flooded or passing cars have soaked them.

"I recognise the Roads Service did respond after the heavy rain had flooded the road at this location and were trying to alleviate the problem but I have asked Roads Service about the infrastructure of the drainage system on the road as it would appear there isn't the capacity to prevent flooding being a regular occurrence.'

Councillor Paul Stewart said there were also problems in Dromara.

He said residents at Church Hill Gardens had feared they would be flooded as they had been three years ago during a bad storm.

"Some of the roads on Wednesday morning were in horrendous condition and it caused a major impact on the traffic," he said. "Really drivers need to slow down.

"I came across one driver travelling at high speed on the main Hillsborough Road when conditions were appalling. That is how accidents are caused.

"One of the school buses did not turn up on time because the driver could not get through because of the floods, but I was assured by Translink that the bus did make it through later.

"I was in contact with the Rivers Agency because of a river which had threatened to flood. I know that they were looking at it.

"It has been horrendous weather, but the area around Dromara seems to have been particularly badly affected."
