First female Deputy Mayor in over a decade

DUNMURRY Cross Councillor Margaret Tolerton has become the first female DUP councillor to be elected as Deputy Mayor of Lisburn.

At the Council AGM last Friday (June 1) Mrs Tolerton, who is also the first female Deputy Mayor in over a decade, was unanimously elected to the position.

Mrs Tolerton was co-opted onto Lisburn City Council following the death of Councillor Stephen Moore. She was then elected by the people of Dunmurry Cross in 2011.

Mrs Tolerton was nominated by Alderman Jonathan Craig and seconded by Councillor Roy Young. Mrs Tolerton said she was ‘delighted’.

“I cannot quite believe it. I would like to thank my colleagues and I will do my best to serve the people of Lisburn” she said.

She was congratulated on her elevation by the newly elected Mayor, Alderman William Leathem, who said: “I have known Margaret for thirty years. She has represented Dunmurry Cross extremely well and I know she will be an extremely efficient and diligent Deputy Mayor.”
