Financial boost for Lagan Valley Regional Park

“I’m absolutely delighted that my party colleague Mark H Durkan has allocated an additional £10,000 to Lagan Valley Regional Park under the Natural Environment Fund,” said Councillor Pat Catney. “At a time when the Department of the Environment is facing down significant cuts as a result of the austerity budget, this is an important allocation to be able to make to environment groups.

“This money will support ongoing work to monitor and manage invasive species which pose threats to our indigenous environment.

“The park has undertaken a job of work to identify prevalent invasive species like Himalayan Balsam, Japanese Knotweed and Giant Hogweed, which can all damage the local environment and may pose public health concerns.

“The park is a fantastic asset to have in our area and I have no doubt that every penny of this money will be spent in a way that enhances the experience for users.”

Councillor Jenny Palmer added: “This significant cash boost is important in maintaining and enhancing the environment. The park is a national treasure with in access of 1.2 million users annually. There can be no doubting the tremendous benefit this funding will be to the delivery of the programme in controlling invasive species, ultimately encouraging more tourists and users to enjoy the delights of the park’s rich environment.”
