Father of six drowns in local reservoir

Michael (Mickey) Donnelly drowned at the Reservoir near Stoneyford last Saturday evening while out on a fishing trip with two sons.

The 44-year-old Ballymurphy man, a roofer by trade, got into difficulty when he got into the water at the spot which is popular for fishermen.

Police say they arrived at the scene shortly after 5pm following a call from ambulance control.

The death is not being treated as suspicious and police have described the incident as 'not malicious.'

Mr Donnelly, also a grandfather of one, had only recently taken up fishing as a hobby. He was interred at Milltown Cemetery on Tuesday following Requiem Mass at Holy Trinity Church in Turf Lodge.

A Northern Ireland Water spokesperson said that the public need to be very careful when near any water

"NI Water is aware of the tragic accident which happened at Leathemstown Reservoir over the weekend," she said. "Our thoughts and sympathies are with Mr Donnelly's family at this very sad time.

"NI Water would urge the public to take care when engaging in activities on or near water. It is understandable that adults and children alike are drawn to these sites as the summer months approach. However, it is important to remember even calm and seemingly shallow water can be dangerous."
