‘Fashion Rocks’ raises £6,000 for cancer charity

FASHION Rocks had the money rolling in for charity last month when an impressive £6,000 was raised for Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children (NICFC) and The Brain Tumour Charity – Danielle McGriskin Fund.

The event, held in The Tannery in Moira on October 25, was organised by Ballinderry girl Danielle McGriskin and her family.

Danielle was diagnosed with a low grade brain tumour in 2011. Despite the tumour causing hydrocephalus, the determined teenager continues to fundraise.

On the night local stores Style Gallery and Vanilla in Lisburn and Enigma of Moira showcased their Autumn/Winter Collections. The Red Hot Roosters, P!nk tribute act Alecia Karr and DJ Mathew Good kept the guests entertained all night and wonderful goody bags from Love Olive put a smile on everyone’s faces.

Danielle said she was delighted with the turnout and added that the money raised will go to a great cause. “After my diagnosis I realised how devastating brain tumours are for many people and how underfunded it is compared to other cancers. I feel extremely lucky that my tumour is low grade and not cancerous, even though it has left me with many symptoms. After researching a number of charities I decided that I wanted to raise money for The Brain Tumour Charity, formerly known as The Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust and Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children.

“My family have enjoyed stays at Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children’s respite centre, Shimna Valley in Newcastle. It was fantastic to meet other teenagers going through the same thing as me. The Brain Tumour Charity funds scientific and clinical research into brain tumours and offers information to those affected. I feel very passionate about wanting to raise awareness and money so we can stop people dying from brain tumours,” she said.

Danielle’s mother, Amanda extended her thanks to all involved in making the evening a success. “I would like to thank everyone who gave their time and contributed in so many ways to help make the night a great success. We are very proud of Danielle who despite being in pain focuses on her fundraising events and has raised £13,000 since January 2012.”

NICFC community fundraising manager, Dawn Weir, said she was “delighted” the event was such a success and urged others to think about fundraising ideas of their own to help such an important charity. To find out how to raise funds for NICFC log onto www.nicfc.com or call 028 9080 5599.

The Brain Tumour Charity’s head of fundraising, Lucy Knight, said: “We are so very grateful to the McGriskins for all their hard work with Fashion Rocks. It is only with the continuing dedication of supporters like them that we will find a cure for brain tumours.”
