Enterprise train service set to stop in LIsburn

LOCAL rail travellers going to Dublin will soon be able to do so without having to travel miles out of their way, as platform extension work will begin at Lisburn Train Station this weekend, signalling the arrival of the Enterprise service in the city.

Local Councillors and residents have long called for the Enterprise to make at least some stope in Lisburn, and the work, which will begin tomorrow (Saturday), is expected to be completed before Christmas.

Welcoming the news, Councillor Ronnie Crawford said: "I welcome the work which is to begin soon in extending one of the platforms in Lisburn Railway station which will facilitate stops by the Belfast - Dublin enterprise and end the charade of Lisburn people having to travel to Portadown before boarding the train."

Environment Minister Edwin Poots added: "It had been identified one of the issues preventing stops was the length of the platform and I welcome the work Translink will be carrying out. I understand the work could be complete before Christmas.

"A minimum number of stops will need to take place at Lisburn and this is something that needs careful thought and pre-planning to ensure stops are taking place at appropriate times for people travelling in either direction."

He added: "I have absolutely no doubt there will be a large demand for this service. For a number of years Translink have failed to provide an adequate service to Lisburn, for both the bus services from the city and indeed the train service.

"Extending this service is a step forward and we will continue to fight to have a better service from our city to other places inside Northern Ireland and to and from Dublin."

Translink NI Railways Route Manager Gerard McAtarsney explained every effort will be made to ensure work is carried out as quietly and quickly as possible:

"The majority of works will take place during the day but there should be no disruption to normal passenger services. Some night work will be required for safety reasons but noise from track machinery will be kept to a minimum."
