Emma’s blog on life as a mum of five is nominated for awards

A GLENAVY mother of five’s daily blog ‘Adventures of an Unfit Mother’ has helped her reach the final of the ‘MAD’ Blog Awards.

Emma Horner from Chapel Road beat off 3,000 blogs to be shortlisted as one of the five finalists in two UK wide categories ‘Blog of the Year’ and ‘Best Family Life Blog.’

The MAD Blog Awards is the largest independent awards programme for parent bloggers in the UK.

Emma, who worked as a primary school teacher and counselling psychologist, is now a full time mum to five children Anna (12), Jude (10), Cormac (8), Rory (6) and Luke (2) and wife to Damian.

She now writes daily stories about her struggles through motherhood.

Emma started writing on the web when she got a personal trainer last year to help her get into shape - hence the title of the blog.

Her trainer asked Emma to write a bit on Facebook about her experiences during her six week training. She loved writing but found she had no space and began to write it as a blog.

Once the training was over it inspired her blog.

Her daily jottings range from the struggles of daily life to her vast shoe collection. One of her favourites is about her youngest playing up at mass and she had to walk out. She entitled it ‘One day at a time sweet Jesus.’

“I am amazed by how many people actually read my blogs,” said Emma. “I am just happy that someone is reading them.

“I get around 400 people a day reading my blog which is far cry from other finalists. There are some with 3500 users per day.

People seem to identify with what I write. Like many mothers I make a lot of mistakes along the way.“

Emma tries to do about four posts every two days.

“I might see something or something will come into my head and think I must note that,” said Emma.

“I enjoy writing and it is fun. It is more of an outlet for me.

“I am a mother of five and sometimes life can be a bit of a rut.

“I don’t sugar coat everything and am 100 per cent honest.”

Emma’s sister nominated her for the awards and the local woman says was delighted to make the finals.

“I am just happy that people are reading it” she said. “I’m amazed at how quickly it has grown and it’s such a wonderful compliment when people tell me it strikes a chord with them. I’m thrilled.”
