Reacting to the death of the former Deputy First Minister on Tuesday, March 21, Dr Doran expressed his deepest condolences to Mr McGuinness’s family.

While many people across the UK and beyond will never forgive Martin McGuinness for the many murderous atrocities committed by the IRA during The Troubles, Dr Doran praised him for his peace building work over the past two decades.

“Martin was a political giant and an inspirational leader who worked tirelessly for peace and reconciliation in Ireland.

“He was known and respected across the world and was a true statesman,” the QUB academic said.

Dr Doran, who failed to win a seat at Stormont in the March 2 poll, added: “Martin McGuinness’s steadfast leadership was always a constant source of strength for us in the republican and nationalist community.

“His leadership, grace and warm personality have transformed Irish politics for the better and his impact will be felt for many years to come.”
