Drumbeg members learn about the rise of the Suffragette movement at April meeting

Drumbeg WI members welcomed visitors from Annahilt, Artana, Derriaghy,and Magheragall Institues to the April meeting.

The speaker Stephanie Lavery from ‘Time Steps’ performed an ‘inspiring’ monologue on the rise of the Suffragette movement.

Using the Pseudo name of Miss Elizabeth Barry she described how women were suppressed socially, politically and educationally.

Stephanie discussed the courage and some of the drastic tactics used to achieve voting rights and better conditions for women.

As the meeting coincided with the 90th birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, members signed a birthday card expressing good wishes and enjoyed a birthday cake made and decorated by Eva Orr.

A vote of thanks on behalf of the visitors was given by Jennifer Ross.

President Rosalind Bloomfield extended good wishes to Joan Mairs who is recovering from surgery.

She also expressed sympathy to Sheelagh McRandall following the death of her Aunt and also to the family circle of former member Mrs May Irwin.

Competition winners were Helen Wilson ,Jane Steele and Rosemary Reid.
