Drivers warned after spate of ‘smash and grabs’

POLICE in Lisburn are warning drivers to be on their guard following a number of smash and grab type incidents from vehicles in the area recently.

And they say that to reduce the number of thefts from vehicles, motorists should realise their vehicle is like a shop window for thieves.

“We would advise all motorists to take those extra few seconds to store your valuables safely in the boot of your car and leave your vehicle knowing that nothing is on display.

“Even if a handbag or briefcase is empty remove it or conceal it in the boot – a thief won’t know it is empty until they have broken into your vehicle, by which time the damage to your car has already been done,” said Constable Geoff Baird.

Police will continue to tackle this type of crime, however we cannot do it alone and strongly appeal to members of the public to take heed of this advice and be vigilant with their property and their vehicles to ensure criminals are not offered easy pickings and easy rewards.”

Constable Baird offered the following advice.

* Park in secure or well-lit locations.

* Keep all valuables and personal possessions out of sight.

* Lock bulky items in the boot.

* Lock doors and boot and close all windows and sunroof.

They also urge drivers to remove a CD player facia if possible and when removing a Sat Nav wipe the mark from the suction cup from the windscreen.
