Driver escapes injury when tiles fall on car

A driver had a lucky escape in Banbridge when roof slates and a piece of guttering fell on top of his car while he sat at traffic lights near the old police station, on Friday.

Scratches and damage was caused to his car and the driver was left shaken but otherwise unharmed in the incident.

The driver went onto Facebook to explain what had happened

“If someone had been walking past they would have been killed,” the driver posted on a local Facebook page site.

“I was sitting at the lights yesterday (Friday) morning when a lump of guttering and a few slates fell off onto my car.

“If someone had been walking past they would have been killed. They should have a temporary walkway while they are fixing it.

“My cars all dented and scratched anyway so no harm but someone’s head would have been fatal.”

Sharon Roland also posted on the Saints and Sinners page, “Lucky it was your car and not a person or someome with a child in a pram,” she said.

The area was cordoned off while repairs were being made to the building, motorists complained of the traffic hold ups while pedestrians were annoyed at the closure of the footpath.

One female pedestrian complained that she and her her two small children were forced to walk on the road along with passing traffic.

Another woman complained that there was no signage to warn pedestrians and motorists of the work taking place and she too was forced to walk on the road.

Emma Louise McLaughlin, posted, “It is extremely dangerous.” A dereliction scheme was carried out at the former police station site in Banbridge earlier this year.

The privately owned building on Church Square, which has been vacant for over 20 years, was fitted with historic murals of the town.
