Crowds pack Moira for festive switch-on

Moira residents recently turned out in force to see local girl Abbie Mussen switch-on the town’s Christmas lights.

Moira Primary School pupil Abbie earned the honour as winner of a recent poetry writing competition

The switch-on event was organised by Matt Peach, Development Officer of Logic, an initiative of St John’s, Moira.

Compere on the night was Simon Henry, Youth Ministry Co-ordinator of St John’s Parish Church, whose rector, the Rev Joanne Megarrell, gave a short Christmas address.

A choir comprising Moira Primary School and Rowandale Primary School sang a selection of Christmas carols.

Special guest was the Deputy Mayor of Lisburn, Councillor Andrew Ewing.

Following the switch-on, the crowds who had packed the centre of the village then packed the nearby St John’s Parish Centre where they enjoyed tea/coffee, mince pies and shortbread served by Betty Derby and her team of ladies from St John’s Parish Church.

During refreshments, the Salvation Army Band played a selection of festive music.
