Counterfeit cash warning from PSNI

LISBURN police are warning retailers of counterfeit currency in circulation in the local area.

Their warning comes after they received a number of complaints from staff at a fast food restaurant at Sprucefield that involved Bank of England notes.

Officers are keen to advise other outlets and retailers of the potential risk and that fake notes could be passed and advise them on what to look out for when taking notes as payment.

Does the main printing feel raised? Can you see a bold and clear watermark when the note is held up to the light? Does the note feel crisp and not limp, waxy or shiny? Is the print clear, sharp and well defined? Are the colours clear and distinct? Compare the suspected note against a genuine note. Is the security thread continuous when the note is held up to the light?

Retailers are asked to display clear warning signs ‘counterfeit currency checks will be carried out’ and ensure store staff are aware of how to examine notes. If a suspicious note is passed contact the police with a description of the person passing the banknote.
