Councillors and residents get their hands dirty

They were taking part in the Big Spring Clean supported by the Lisburn City Council who help local schools and community groups willing to clean up their community.

The Council supplied litter pickers and bags and it collected the rubbish at the end of the event.

Councillor Andrew Ewing, Chairman of the Council’s Environmental Services Committee, said: “The Big Spring Clean initiative has proved to be very effective over the past two years with a combined total of 126 tonnes of rubbish being collected.

“This year Tidy NI partnered with the Department of the Environment’s Rethink Waste Campaign.

“The residents of Lisburn have always played their part in this initiative.

“Community groups and schools across the Lisburn area have already approached the Council and we would like to hear from others interested in participating in this initiative.

“Together we can make a difference and give our city a BIG Spring Clean.”

Alderman Paul Porter, said: “It is unbelievable how much litter is left lying in local communities – it is only when you stop to pick up the litter that you realise the scale of the problem.

“We all want to be proud of where we live and to enjoy a better, healthier and happier quality of life – so please contact the Council and request its help in your own community tidy up.”

The members of the Community Association enjoyed the BIG Spring Clean event so much and found it to be such a worthwhile exercise that they have plans to hold another clean up in the summer.

Council support is available to schools and community groups throughout the year if they wish to hold a clean up event.
