Council supports ‘lights out’ war commemoration

This event will be a shared moment of reflection, 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War.

Councillor Pat Catney, Chairman of the Council’s Corporate Services Committee, said: “I am delighted that Lisburn City Council has chosen to plunge their landmark headquarters building into darkness, to mark the hour Britain entered the First World War a century ago.

“Many brave soldiers from all of our communities lost their lives in the Great War; and I am honoured that such as initiative has been established to encourage everyone to reflect on the 100th Anniversary of the beginning of that war and to remember those who did not return home to their families and friends. Householders and businesses are encouraged to be part of this initiative and turn all the lights off and only leave single light or candle burning. This will ensure that this dramatic nationwide event will show the UK as a darkened canvas with single lights appearing across the four nations.”

The Mayor of Lisburn, Councillor Andrew Ewing, added: “I hope that everyone across the Lisburn City Council area will get behind this initiative and remember those who fought bravely and those who lost their lives fighting for the democracy of others under a single light.”
