Council launches WWI centenary events grant

This scheme will award a number of grants to a maximum value of £500 to local communities wishing to commemorate the forthcoming First World War Centenary on August 4.

Alderman Paul Porter, Chairman of the Council’s Leisure Services Committee, said: “The term community is central to the work of the Council’s Leisure Services Department and through its many grant schemes and sporting activities it works to bring people together right across Lisburn. As soldiers from all communities fought side by side in the First World War, it is poignant and fitting that community groups within Lisburn mark the centenary of this solemn war.

“The War Memorial was initially erected in Castle Street is a permanent reminder of all those from Lisburn who lost their lives in the First World War. Within Lisburn there is deep gratitude for the dedication and sacrifice of all our service personnel, fallen, serving and veterans, and I expect this grant to be very popular as a result.”
