City’s festive trade boost

The Public Realm works going on in the city failed to deter shoppers coming into Lisburn over the over the festive period with many traders reporting an increase on last year’s sales figures.

Alderman Allan Ewart, Chairman of Lisburn City Council’s Economic Development Committee, commented: “We are very pleased that our traders have experienced encouraging sales over the Christmas period and that trading is improving for our city centre retailers.”

He continued: “With reports that footfall has increased and those visiting are spending more in our shops it really is a time to share in the vision for the future of Lisburn.

“The city centre is transforming now with the final stages of the Public Realm scheme being delivered.

“The installation of the lighting columns and planting of trees through Market Square and Bow Street will make a positive impact and help the over city centre vision come together, making a real difference to the environment and experience for visitors to our city.

“I’d like to thank everybody for their patience during the works and look forward to the benefits that we are confident that the scheme will ultimately bring.”

Mark McCall from well known men’s clothes store Mcalls said: “We traded exceptionally well all through the Christmas and sale period with visitors from all over the province shopping at McCalls. We’re looking forward to the completion of the public realm work and the launch of a new Lisburn in 2015.”

Angela Montgomery, City Centre Officer, Lisburn City Centre Management said feedback from traders has been very positive with businesss saying there was a surge leading up to Christmas and reporting their winter sales have been very busy. Others described it as a “fantastic Christmas”.
