Check out your benefits

THE Minister for Social Development, Nelson McCausland, has launched a pilot scheme to help ensure that the people of Downshire, in the borough of Lisburn City Council, receive all the benefits to which they are entitled.

The Minister said: “As part this year’s benefit uptake programme, my Department is working with Lisburn City Council to ensure local people are accessing their full entitlement to benefits. Engaging with trusted partners, like faith based organisations and community groups in a tailored programme, is a key opportunity to reach those who are most vulnerable.”

A ‘Clinic Model’ pilot scheme has been set up, which is unique in combining the expertise of government, civic partners, churches, and voluntary and community groups, to help target both new and existing customers, of all ages.

The Mayor of Lisburn, Alderman William Leathem said: “Lisburn City Council is pleased to be working with the Minister’s Department regarding this local initiative. Having identified a need for such a pilot programme we are certain that it will be beneficial to many local Downshire residents and their community. We look forward to implementing this programme across the Council area to help ensure that all residents receive their full benefit entitlement.”

The benefit entitlement check is for all ages and also covers a range of other benefits and services, such as entitlement to the Warm Homes scheme, the Boiler Replacement scheme, rates relief, housing benefit and other supports, which may not necessarily be financial.

The promotional materials will also highlight a dedicated freephone ‘Make the Call’ Benefits Advice Line - 0800 232 1271 - offering people the choice to contact the benefit advice line directly. The advice line is operated by experienced advisors who can provide information about what benefits they may be entitled to and arrange help with making a claim. A family member or carer can even make the call.
