Chance to see how craftspeople are helping conserve historic structures

The central works depot will be open from 10am – 3.30pm tomorrow (Saturday) when NIEA craftspeople will showcase the skills and specialist work needed to help conserve historic structures.

On display will be conservation joinery, blacksmithing and stone carving, the experts will explain how they carry out this fascinating work to help protect Northern Ireland’s built heritage.

The public can tour the various work areas and see the specialist stone saw in operation along with the traditional skills training facility recently set up.

Information on the historic environment and the resources and materials available from NIEA will be on display and there will also be activities for children and families, who can ‘dig’ for artefacts, make their own prehistoric pot and build an arch.

The Works depot is housed in old railway buildings on other side of tracks at Moira railway station.

The free event is for anyone who is interested in how conservation work is carried out and for families who want to do something a little different for the day.
