Cancer patients invited to join the Lagan walk

THE Ulster Cancer Foundation (UCF) is holding a walk specifically for cancer patients on Saturday April 28 at the Lagan Towpath in Lisburn.

The UCF walking service, which is free of charge, is open to all cancer patients and the walks have been chosen as suitable for people who are currently undergoing treatment.

Research has shown that cancer patients who take moderate exercise while having treatment suffer less debilitating effects from fatigue, one of the most common symptoms affecting the quality of life of patients.

Liz Atkinson, Head of Care Services, UCF, said: “Our walking groups follow a slow and progressive walking programme that allows the body to gradually rebuild its normal levels of fitness.

“Having the opportunity to meet other people in a similar situation and getting the chance to exercise outdoors brings additional emotional and health benefits. This new service offers a convenient and enjoyable way of accessing both.”

If you are currently undergoing treatment for cancer and would like to join a UCF walking group, or if you’d like to volunteer as a leader, please contact Morag Chambers at UCF, Telephone 028 9066 3281, or email [email protected]
