Lisburn Councillor Robbie Butler has urged the Farming Minister to implement an urgent support programme to protect the region’s under-pressure potato sector otherwise ‘potato blight’ could take on a whole new dangerous meaning for the rural community.
Councillor Butler has asked the Minister to give “a cast iron guarantee” that her Department would introduce additional support measures for the potato industry. “I want a guarantee that her Department will find funding to continue to provide a wide range of support measures for the potato sector,” he said. “This must include our agricultural training college providing technical and business competence and bench marking programmes. Lagan Valley has a large rural constituency, where farming of the land – and especially potatoes is an important sector.”
