Bigger Park and Ride scheme gets go-ahead

THE temporary Park & Ride at Sprucefield has been so successful it is now set to be upgraded with a larger facility at a nearby site.

Planning approval was granted at this week’s meeting of Lisburn Council’s Planning Committee for the relocation of the facility to the rear of 41, 45 and 49 Eglantine Road, which will allow direct access to Junction 8 of the M1 at Blaris.

The proposal by Roads Service, which received two objections, will include increased parking for a total of 658 cars, with disabled parking, security hut, public toilet, bicycle stands and two bus stops.

Speaking about the scheme, a DRD Roads Service Spokesperson said: “The existing Park & Ride at Sprucefield was originally provided as a temporary facility for the duration of the M1/ Westlink works. This has however proved so popular that a decision has been taken to continue its use.

“The Department currently leases the land on which we operate the existing Park & Ride, however we are keen to provide a larger facility.

“In order to achieve this we have been in discussions with a neighbouring land owner with a view to purchasing the necessary land. As a first step in this process, a planning application was lodged for a relocated Park & Ride facility, which would provide 650 parking spaces.

“We will now progress the development of this new site when funding becomes available.”
