Beekeeping experts to address INIB conference at Hillsborough

BEEKEEPING experts are to address the Institute of Northern Ireland Beekeepers conference at Hillsborough this Saturday.

The annual event will be held in the Village Centre Hillsborough, and this year the guest speakers will be Professor Keith Delaplane, from the University of Georgia USA, and Ged Marshall a commercial beekeeper and queen breeder from Buckinghamshire.

Professor Keith Delaplane is no stranger to Ireland having been a guest of INIB on several occasions, he will be giving two lectures “The Superorganism, and why it matters to Beekeepers” and “Bee-Breeding Fact or Fiction” Keith will in fact be delivering these lectures at the National Honey Show in London, and it gives local beekeepers the opportunity to hear this world renowned expert on their own doorstep.

He is Professor of Entomology and director of the honey bee research and education program at the University of Georgia, and national director of a multimillion dollar project to study and reverse bee decline.

Ged Marshall also need no introduction to beekeepers in Northern Ireland, having enthralled us all with his knowledge and experience of practical beekeeping from his last visit. He will be giving two talks “Swarm control- without 9 day checks” and “Re- Queening – Why, When , How”. Ged has been running a commercial beekeeping enterprise since 1994, having studied beekeeping in Tenerife, Denmark, France and with the late Brother Adam at Buckfast Abbey.

As well as the lecture program there will be the Annual Honey Show which brings together the best exhibitors for the last show of the season, as always Bill Turnbull INIB President will present the awards. Costs for the day which include lunch, morning and afternoon coffee, scones etc is £25 for INIB members, £30 for non-members. Numbers will be limited so early booking is recommended.
