Beauty students take part in exchange project

A team of SERC beauty students from Lisburn took part in an exciting exchange with French College Lycée Professionnel Saint Pierre in Calais.

A group of six beauty students accompanied by their English and Beauty tutors visited the College as part of a project funded by the Charles de Gaulle Trust through the British Council.

The programme is an opportunity for the young people involved to learn more about their subject, how it is taught in another European country and European citizenship.

The group were hosted by lecturers Lisa McCormick Baxter, Kathy Webb and the Level 2 and 3 Beauty Therapy classes.

They then worked together on beauty practices and techniques in the College salon, experiencing treatments that they don’t practice back in their own College.

A trip to the professional studio of well-known make-up artist Paddy McGurgan was also part of the project, as well as a city tour of Belfast, a class in the Irish Linen Centre and a Northern Irish inspired meal at our very own Linen Room restaurant.

The French students left after four days and then it was SERC’s turn as the following week four of the students travelled by aeroplane and train to France to experience life as a beauty student there.

The 8am starts came as a bit of a shock but the French staff and students made the group welcome and kept them busy with a French cooking class, perfume workshop, hairstyling class, lace workshop and again beauty treatments that the girls hadn’t experienced at SERC.

SERC student Francesca Graham says, “I had never been to France and this was a great opportunity to see how they live and study”.

Rachel McAlernon agreed, “I loved every minute of it, the French are so friendly and made us feel at home. “It was difficult at times because of the language but I really enjoyed working with the French girls on different tasks.”

Lecturer Lisa McCormick Baxter said that the experience has been amazing.
