Mr Beckett said they believed that due to the increased traffic using the main Lurgan to Crumlin road, traffic calming measures should be implemented as speed restrictions are being ignored.

He said: "Such measures will reduce speed and accidents within the village and we feel will provide a safe environment for everyone and in particular older villagers and school children who attend the village primary school. We could have gone outside the area to get more signatures but we decided to contain the petition to the area immediately affected."

Mr Donaldson said he was delighted to support the petition and the call for traffic calming measures.

He said: "The opening of the new school and increase in traffic highlighted the need to slow traffic down through the village. Significant expansion of the village supports the needs of the traffic calming measures."
