THE 26th Annual Meeting of the Lisnagarvey Area of the WI was held recently in Christ Church Halls.
Area Chairperson Anne Hunter (Derriaghy WI) opened the meeting by welcoming members and extending a warm welcome to the guest speaker, Lady Christine Eames.
Executive member Helen Dunlop gave the Federation and Homecraft reports. Other Sub Committee reports were given by Marie Darragh for Home and Garden, Ina Watson for Magazine and Leisure and Ruth Graham for International.
Lady Eames, former World President of the Mother’s Union, spoke on the importance of family and friends. She emphasised the value of friendship and how members in the Women’s Institute know how important friendship is.
She shared stories from her experiences of representing the Mother’s Union abroad as World President, of the many friends she had made but also the poverty she witnessed. “Friendships will stand to us”, she said “have the courage to make new friends”.
Speaking also on community she reminded the ladies that the community belongs to each one of us and that we have enormously important responsibility to make it the best it can be.
Marie Darragh, Derriaghy WI, gave the vote of thanks to Lady Eames.
After a delicious supper members had an opportunity to view the excellent craft items and competition entries on display.
Mrs Helen Dunlop then presented the annual awards: Area Quiz shield, Kathy Yuille, Anne Watson and Elizabeth Hendron, Killultagh WI; Area Bowls Shield, Vera Spratt, Derriaghy WI; Anna Wilson Cup for Cookery, Ruth Graham, Crumlin WI; Masie Law Salver for Craft, Dorothy Andrews, Maze Brookfield WI; Ann Henning Salver for Craft Ribbons, Deborah Armstrong and Norma Lusty, Maghaberry WI.
Silver Spinning Wheels were also presented to Annie Kirkwood, Deborah Armstrong and Dorothy Andrews.
Helen congratulated Maghaberry WI on bringing five cups to the Lisnagarvey area; these were awarded for various handcrafts and competed for over all of the Northern Ireland Institutes. The cups were on display along with some of the excellent crafts.
