Another blooming great reason to shop in Lisburn

THE coveted Roses in Town Award was presented to Lisburn City Council at the recent Ulster In Bloom Awards for its creative and abundant floral displays in the City.

In addition, the charming village of Hillsborough will represent Northern Ireland in the Large Village Category of the National Britain in Bloom Awards which are to be held in a few months time.

Lisburn City Council has a long history of achievement for its floral displays, which are regarded as some of the best in Northern Ireland and indeed the United Kingdom. At the awards event Lisburn Councillor, Jenny Palmer, represented the Northern Ireland Local Government Association (NILGA) which runs the Translink Ulster in Bloom Competition and presented the magnificent crystal bowl Roses in Town Award to Councillor Andrew Ewing, Chairman of the Council’s Environmental Services Committee, and to the Council’s Gardening Teams who create the floral displays.

Mrs Palmer said: “This award is for all the people in the Council who work on the floral displays around our city and villages. In particular I want to thank Roy Hanna, the Assistant Director of the service, Mark Gregg, the Parks Manager and of course our expert gardeners, without whom we simply would not achieve such success. It was a particular privilege for me to represent NILGA on the day and to see Lisburn City Council win this award was the icing on the cake for me.”

The Chairman of the Environmental Services Committee, Councillor Andrew Ewing said: “I am really delighted to receive the award with the Council staff who make it all possible.

“We are also thrilled to be going forward in the National Britain in Bloom Awards later in the summer, with Hillsborough and its spectacular floral displays representing Northern Ireland in the Large Village category of this prestigious competition. I have no doubt that the village will be looking at its absolute best this summer. I also want to extend the Council’s appreciation to the Hillsborough Village Committee, who work side-by-side with us in planning for the glorious floral displays we see in the village.

“The award demonstrates that the floral displays here in Lisburn are among the very best in the Province. As any of us who is interested in gardening knows, creating displays of this magnitude involves many many hours of hard work and skill, not to mention keeping the flowers looking at their best throughout the summer months.

“I would like to echo Councillor Palmer’s words and congratulate the entire Environmental Services team,” he concluded.

With summer approaching the Council’s Gardening Teams are already planting out the many roundabouts, parks and open spaces to ensure the City looks its best for forthcoming events, visitors and tourists to Lisburn City.
