Action plan for rural areas is launched

SOCIAL Development Minister, Nelson McCausland launched the Housing Executive’s action plan for tackling the housing needs of people in rural areas at the Balmoral Show.

The plan outlines priorities for the Housing Executive over the next two years in relation to the housing needs in rural areas. It details over 50 actions to increase the supply of social housing for those on the social housing waiting list, and support vulnerable people living in rural areas, as well as helping sustain rural communities.

Mr McCausland said: “My Department recognises the importance of rural areas as places to live and work and aims to create a living countryside with strong vibrant communities. This Rural Action Plan will help deliver on these objectives.

“The four themes of delivering better homes, supporting independent living, building stronger communities and delivering quality services provide a framework for improvement and echo my own Department’s overarching Housing Strategy for Northern Ireland.”

Donald Hoodless, Housing Executive Chairman said: “At a time of change for our own organisation we hope this Rural Action Plan demonstrates to rural communities our continued commitment to them.”
