Lily O’Hara said that she had been overwhelmed with love after being left devastated when thieves broke into her home, ransacked her house and stole money and sentimental items.

Kitchen cupboards were broken too as the burglars broke ornaments, looking for money which she had been saving to pay for her funeral.

It is believed that the thief or thieves gained entry to the terrace house through the back door.

Mrs O’Hara, who has lived in the property for 65 years, was given £7,000 in donations just before Christmas.

People have been very good to me since the break-in,” said Mrs O’Hara.

“They sent me donations, flowers, cards and presents and I just wanted to say a big thank you to all of them.

“I hope I have not missed anyone out.

“I have been very surprised by the reaction of such kindness. I would like to thank all those people who came to visit me especially the Mayor of Lisburn, as well as the many neighbours, friends and relatives.

“I would like to mention the Lisburn City Council for what they did, as well as local churches and chapels. I got so many lovely bouquets of flowers that I had to put them into another room. I got lovely hampers and presents too.

“I would also like to thank Golden Glen Caterers and people who helped raise money and set up Facebook accounts on my behalf. It was very good of them to do that for me. I am so very grateful for that. I would like to thank local bands and those who carried out a street collection.

“I have been so overwhelmed with kindness from local shops, gospel choirs and a local funeral director was also very good to me. The community near east Belfast where my son John owns Captain Cods chip shop have also been supportive.

“I would like to thank John and Phyllis for their continued love and support. I could not have got through this without them. My son is going to get me a new kitchen which is so very generous of him.”

A defiant Mrs O’Hara, despite her ordeal, went ahead to celebrate her grandson Gareth’s wedding in Glengormly after he came over from Tokyo to marry his Korean girlfriend.
