Sowing seeds of community spirit

Glenclare Community Group were pleased to provide members of the community with a selection of free seed packets and seed trays as part of a grant received from Lisburn & Castlereagh Borough Council and the Department of Communities Covid-19 – Connecting Communities and Volunteering Support Grants Programme.

It was intended that the free seeds and seed trays would be distributed in the carpark of St Clare’s Community Hall between 12 noon and 2pm on Saturday. However, it was so popular that all of the seeds and seed trays were gone within 40 minutes!

A wide range of seeds, supplied by Glenavy Garden Centre were available, including easy to grow peas and sunflowers for young children right through to petunias for hanging baskets and everything needed to start a vegetable patch.

Chairman of Glenclare Community Group, Paul O’Brien said: “We were blown away with the response from the community. It was fantastic to see such a range of people coming out to collect their seeds, from young families right through to older members of our community.

We can’t wait to welcome people back into St Clare’s Community Hall when it is safe to do so. In the meantime, we hope that providing these seeds presents an opportunity to connect with the community, particularly after the months of isolation that has been necessitated by Covid.”
