Fresh new look for primary school’s hall

Ballycarrickmaddy Primary School has unveiled a fresh new look for its school hall, thanks to a paint donation from the Dulux Let’s Colour Project.

The school, based on Killultagh Road, has had an eye-catching mural in its hall for the past 10 years, which was painted after receiving £500 of National Lottery funding.

The mural, which depicted a cartoon version of the school and the roads surrounding it, had started to fade and staff were keen to bring it back to life with bright colours.

A team of 20 parent volunteers rolled up their sleeves to revamp the mural for the 140 children who come through the school’s doors every day, using paints donated by Dulux Decorator Centres in Belfast.

Designed by classroom assistant, Wendy Scott, the mural now depicts the school in a cartoon style with ‘Learning for Life,’ the school’s mission statement, written across the top.

The paint donation was made as part of the Let’s Colour project to add ‘colour’ to people’s lives, after school principal, Colin Ford, nominated the project online.

Mr Ford said: “The mural was already a brilliant piece of artwork, but it really needed sprucing up with a fresh lick of paint.

“We’re incredibly grateful for the paint donation, which has allowed us to bring what is a key part of our school back to life.

“The feedback from all the volunteers has been really positive and the children’s faces lit up when they saw the newly-painted mural which they helped to design.”

Tony Foat, store manager of Dulux Decorator Centres on The Meadows Retail Park, said: “We often hear about murals that are already really striking and that just need a splash of bright colour to freshen them up.

“The volunteers have done a brilliant job with the donated paints and we hope the new mural is enjoyed by many more generations of schoolchildren in the future.”
