The DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) has released its twice yearly list of banned UK number plates, deemed too distasteful for the road.

Personalised number plates can, at times be tasteful, and then can often mean something special to the person driving the car to which they are attached.

But sometimes some plates can be a little too suggestive, or even offensive, so, bi-annually, the DVLA bans number plates that they believe are too rude to be seen out on the road.

How do DVLA decide which number plates to ban?

Deciding which distasteful plates don’t make it out onto the roads isn’t something which is done by a computer, but is done during a bi-annual meeting.

Experts examine each potential combination of letters and numbers in order to ensure that nothing offensive slips through the net and out onto the road.

A spokesperson from the DVLA said, “The vast majority of registration marks are made available, but the Agency withholds any combinations of numbers and letters that may cause offence, embarrassment or are in poor taste.”
